In the Works
One of the nice things about modern game development is the ability for developers to continue to work on their product after it's been released.
To that end, we've been working on the first update for Koala Krush.
For the sake of logistics, we've delayed the submission of Koala Krush HD until the update is ready to go.
What's in the update? A couple bug fixes and a redesigned mode select screen. We're also hoping to get the build size down so the game can be downloaded over cell networks. That way, the instant you tell your friends about how much joy you are experiencing with our game, they can buy it right away while the impression is fresh.
Speaking of which, have you told your friends about Koala Krush? As an independent developer we rely strongly on word of mouth.
If you're enjoying Koala Krush and would like to see more of it, please tell your friends. Share the joy.
Speaking of joy....
There's been talk around the office of adding another animal to the game. Perhaps a bunny.
Do you have a preference? Leave a comment if you do.
In fact, go ahead and leave a comment if you have anything to say about the game. We're open to suggestions. Maybe you have in mind a way in which Koala Krush could give you even more joy.
We're all about joy here at Elder Dragon.
Oh hey, look at this. A handy link your friends can use to buy the game once you've directed them to the blog. How about that? I almost didn't notice it.
Casual and Niche Markets
A few people have noted to me that there is a bit of a difference in "vibe" between a company called Elder Dragon Studios and a game by that same company entitled Koala Krush.
I agree, but let me explain.
There are two types of games that I'd like to produce. Koala Krush is an example of the first kind. It's small, it's focused, it's 99 cents worth of joy and it's a twist on a proven genre. It's for what is generally known as the casual market. People who play games during their commute or for 2-3 minutes periods throughout the day.
Turns out there are a lot of people like that, and they want games. Games which I will happily provide, just so long as I can find a way to do them that I think is new and or interesting.
The second type of game is the type that fits into the niche markets. Turn based squad tactics, recreation of table top gaming experiences, rogue likes. In short, nerd stuff.
There are lots of people making casual games and rightly so. There's a huge market and still plenty of room for innovation.
But for niche gamers like myself, there are fewer offerings. That's fine, it's the way of the world and as niche gamers we're used to it. But I would still like to see more games in that vein.
So I'd like to make games for both markets. I may even find some overlap between the two.
So if it seems like there's a disconnect between the company's name and its first offering, I'm hoping that becomes less of an issue as our game portfolio expands.
In other news, I'm listening to feedback on Koala Krush and gathering info for future updates. If you have feedback, please either let us know on Twitter or drop us an e-mail using our Contact Us page.
If you haven't played yet, check out this screenshot. It can be difficult to extrapolate from the image below the sheer joy you may feel when playing Koala Krush. I assure you, it is potentially quite a lot of joy.
The little red guy in the center is a Chameleon. He changes colors when you pick him up and he acts as a wildcard. He also doubles the points you score, so try to use him on the biggest chain you can. The purple guys are Sloths. Some people have asked if they're sad. I think they may just be tired.

Of Androids and Electric Koalas
So Koala Krush has been available for 2 days now. Everyone who plays it loves it, which is great. That's kinda the point. So, that's working out.
The comment I'm hearing most often from people who have yet to play it is "When can I get it for my Droid?"
The answer is, "Not yet, but just you wait."
The longer answer is that both an HD version of Koala Krush for iPad and an Android version are in the planning stages. The goal being, to put Koala Krush in the hands of as many people as possible.
But maybe you can't wait. Maybe you wish you were playing it right now. Here's a picture of the Penguin. Does that help?

I think the Penguin might be my favorite. He was the last animal to go in. He was so much better than all the previous animals, that Laney had to go back and up the quality of all the others. For a short time he was yellow, but then he looked like a canary. So we added the scarf, but then he looked like a canary wearing a scarf. And frankly, that made no sense.
I think now he looks much better. Like a little gentleman.
Announcing Koala Krush
I'm happy to say that as of today, our first game is available on the iPhone app store for 99 cents.
It's called Koala Krush and it's a twist on the match-3 genre. What's the twist? The pieces wander the board. You can pick them up and put them wherever you like, so with a little practice you can make groups of four or five pretty easily. You can get as many as nine if you're a pro.
Also, it's adorable.
See?

Little guy is just happy to be here.
You like him? If so, there are more like him, and not just Koalas. We've also got Sloths, Otters, Chameleons, Bears, Turtles and a Penguin for some reason.
